Dowel joint in beech

A dowel joint uses a dowel, a pin fitted into matching holes, to connect pieces of wood. Beech is one hardwood named for making the pin.

Making the pin

Ellis (1908) says a beech or oak pin should be cleft in the direction of the grain, roughly trimmed round, then pointed and driven through a dowel plate, a plate with a hole that sizes the pin.
