Dowel joint in oak
A dowel joint in oak joins pieces of oak with dowels, short round wooden pins, fitted into matching holes.
Making the pins
Ellis (1908) describes pins made from tough hardwood such as oak or beech. They are cleft in the direction of the grain, roughly trimmed round, pointed, and driven through a dowel plate, a tool that forms or guides the round section.
Framed work
Hasluck (1907) records oak dowel pins being used with draw-bore pins when complicated framing is finally glued up on the bench. Oak is named as the pin material in that framing work.
