Rebate joint in oak

A rebate joint in oak joins pieces with one part fitted into a step-shaped recess cut in another. Oak is the timber used for the pieces.

The rebate

A rebate is the step-shaped recess along an edge or face of a piece. The matching part sits against its step, bringing the pieces together at the edge.

Oak panel work

Jones (1920) says that two well-figured panels of wainscot oak, oak prepared for panelling, should be secured in position by a bead, a narrow strip, mitred around and pinned into the rebate.
