Woodworm is the common name for holes and damage made when beetle larvae tunnel through timber.

Judge the damage

Woodworm attack does not automatically make a piece unusable. Structural damage is often slight, but a load-bearing member still deserves a careful assessment rather than a decision based only on the number of visible holes.

Do not confuse the sign

The marks may resemble damage from the common furniture beetle, a different timber insect. That resemblance can make sounder wood look suspect, so identify the cause and judge the actual loss of material before deciding what the timber can do.
