Hinging is the fitting and fixing of hinges so that a door swings correctly on its frame. It is simple to describe but not simple to do well.

When it happens, and why it needs care

In building work, hanging doors is carried out as part of second fixing, the later stage of interior joinery carried out once the plastering is finished. Doing it properly takes considerable care to get a satisfactory result.

Hinges and joints

Tee hinges, shaped like the letter T with a long strap arm, and spring hinges, which close the door under their own spring tension, are among the types commonly used to hang doors. Factory-scale production created strong demand for faster assembly, and this spurred many new hinge designs, largely European in origin. One particular door joint, paired with a specific method of hinging, is recorded as giving a better result than a plain butt joint, where the meeting edges are simply cut square and brought together.
