Hornbeam is a hard-wearing timber used for planes, for turning wood on a lathe, and sometimes for wooden screws.

Useful properties

Hornbeam has good shear strength, meaning resistance to forces that try to make one part slide past another, and it resists splitting. Those qualities suit parts that must take rubbing or sideways force.

Where it appears

Hornbeam has been used to make planes and turns well on a lathe. Box and hornbeam are both named as suitable for screws, while beech is acceptable when its thread is cut coarsely.

Keep the choice specific

The timber is sometimes imported from America. Select the piece for the task rather than assuming that one use describes every board.
