Laburnum

Laburnum is a dark greenish-brown timber used for ornamental cabinet-work and marquetry, decorative work made by assembling veneers.

Colour and seasoning

Fresh heartwood, the inner mature wood of the tree, starts bright yellow and can darken towards a greenish tint as it dries. Season it, dry it in a controlled way, slowly to reduce checking, cracks at board ends, and splitting.

A material for detail

Its documented woodworking use is in decorative cabinet-work and marquetry, where small pieces of contrasting wood are assembled into a pattern. The plant also has poisonous seeds, which is a warning about the seeds rather than a stated property of the timber.
